MG MGB Technical - K&N ?????
A major suplier has a sale on for K&N pancake filters so it seems like a good time to make the switch../ Questions. Should I get the thin 1 3/4 in. or the thick 3 inch (a little cheaper). Should I buy new number 6 needles at the same time or wait to see how she runs...This is a 70 B. so both sizes will fit and while I like the looks of the thin units I will buy which ever will provide the best running engine. |

Bob, Generally, the thicker the air filter, the better the engine can breathe. Even if the thinner filters would be enough, there would be no disadvantages at all if you'd install the thicker ones instead. So it seems a better idea to get the thicker ones (especially since they are cheaper too). Can't help on the needle issue though, but I'm sure there are plenty of people on this board who can. fwiw, Alex |

Hi Bob I agree with Alex - the larger the filter the better since it will minimize the air flow resistance. I installed the K&N filters that matched the original filter sizes in the Cooper cans - think they are about 3" thick. At the same time I constructed the "Bob" filter arrangement as shown on the following web site http://www.hotelling.com/mgb7.htm My 73B has HIF carbs. After the change, my engine had symptons of running weak so after consulting the WinSu program I selected AAA needles to replace the original ABD needles. It ran great after that change. Hi all, As mentionned by Alex & Barry, the thickest will prove the best if possible ( take care to servo booster that may prevent easy settlement ). Yes for the needles, you must get the richer ones as told by Mr. P.Burgess in "How to power Tune MGB series engines" . So far for an HS4 you have to switch from FX to 6 needles and for HIF4 you move from AAU to ABD/AAA needles . - Have fun - |

Use AAA needles and green jets to get the correct mixture with K&N. |

I Had those type on my midget but the trouble with the K&N type are far too much air and crap gets in i would either settle for the SU type with much better filter foam or Pipercross maybe more expensive but they do last longer and you dont get bits in the carbs tel you what though dont know if these are still made but SpeedoGraph used to make a copy of the K&N filter to fit the B and Midget car this was exact in every fashion and costs a fraction of the ammount even if the K&N's are on sale OK they are not branded but for the cost you could tryu them to see if they are good for you and dispose of em in a year (yes they do have the chrome surounds) worth a try In the UK cost about 10 pounds each |

WOW! Over 50 words and about three different subjects (none of which I particularly agree with) in each sentence. Had to read it a couple times just to figure out what he ment. |
