MG MGB Technical - K&N Air Filter for DGV
I'm considerations buying a K&N filter for my DGV . Does the filter sold by Moss have a provision for the oil separator breather hose? George |

What's DGV? |
Allan Reeling |
Weber carb Allan George, I doubt it but unless you put a link to the item there might be confusion as the parts supplied by Moss USA might be different to those supplied by Moss Europe (or they might not, I don't know) |

What year engine? If after Oct 68 you would be better off fitting a PCV valve to the inlet manifold if you can, rather than relying on the very marginal crankcase ventilation when the rocker cover was connected to the air cleaner can. |

Paul, I do have an early PVC valve. George |

PCV valve. The car is a 78. |

George. This is the type of question which should be asked of K&N. They are the ones who, hopefully, know the design and capabilities of their products. That being said, the last K&N filter I purchased, about five years ago for one of my American vehicles, was made in China and the cotton sandwiched between the wire mesh was quite inconsistent in its distribution. Where the folds were, you could see where the material had not folded properly and left significant gaps where there was not cotton material. The mechanic who worked on our American cars noted that he was seeing this problem with a number of K&N filters and that K&N was not honoring their warranty for this problem. Therefore, I would not consider the purchase of any K&N air filter unless I could hold it in my hands and examine it before purchase. The last K&N air filter for a DGV that I purchased did not have any hole, or knock out plate, in the bottom portion of the filter holder with which to tie the filter into the PCV system. It was purchased from a then well known MGB specialist who claimed that K&N did not make such a filter set. Again, K&N would be the one to ask about their current production. I went to BAP, a car parts company which originally specialized in British Auto Parts (BAP) but has reoriented itself towards imported cars in general and the older VW cars in particular. The Weber DGV is a common conversion carb for the VW and BAP had filters of similar style to the K&N with a base plate having the knock out plate for attaching a 90 degree plastic elbow which was included with the filter kit. I have run this filter with good results, on three cars, over the last 10 to 15 years. Les |

"I do have an early PVC valve." In that case you don't need a pipe to the air cleaner. The PCV is connected to the front tappet chest cover and draws a low level of vacuum in the crankcase. Fresh air is drawn into the crankcase, to ventilate it and remove fumes and condensation, from one of two places from the factory. The first was via a vented and filtered oil filler cap, the second was via the charcoal canister on North American spec cars. If the canister has been removed, and you have the original rocker cover with the canister port on the back, then simply put a small K&N filter on that port. That will do the filtering, the restriction is in the port itself. If you have replaced the rocker cover with one that doesn't have a port then you will either have to use a vented and filtered oil filler cap, or connect a port to the cover with a very small hole. |

Before you purchase a K&N you should read this objective report on air filters: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html |

the problem is most owners, particularly many classic car owners, don't clean or replace their air filters enough, some not bothering even with services because they "haven't done the mileage" or "the filters are not dirty /don't look dirty / look clean" or "I changed the engine oil only a couple of years ago" |

The PCV is installed. Yes i have the proper valve cover. The article on air filters makes a lot of sense. Les and Steven saved me $100 and the car runs great! George |
