MG MGB Technical - K&N Air Filters for sidedraft carbs

Hi all,

When making the final assembly of my new engine with a crossflow head and sidedraft carbs, Chris found that the carbs are too close together for the air filters (which I bought a while ago), so they can't be installed.
The part number is (not entirely sure, but nearly 100%) 56-1340, they are 3"1/4 deep, I don't quite recall the other dimensions.
What air filters are you guys using (especially David, as you are running sidedraft carbs too)? Is there perhaps a way of fiddling so that they airfilters will fit after all (not counting on that though...)

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Alex:
A little more info about your car (year, etc) might get you more responses.

My apologies,

It's a 1965 car, RHD, for which Chris Betson is building a 1950cc engine with an HRG Derrington crossflow head. It'll be running on 2 Dellorto 40 DHLA carbs (which are externally identical to the Weber DCOE carbs, but use a slightly different set of internal parts).
When I started collecting parts for the engine, I bought a pair of K&N filters for this type of carbs (part number 56-1340), but did not think that they might be too wide, which they are (or the carbs are too close together for the filters of course :-D )
So I'd like to know which one I should get and I'd also like to know what the guy who're running a crossflow engine already are using.

Thanks,

Alex

Alexander,
I bought my K&Ns (square edged) from Pierce Manifolds along with my carbs and I do not have the part number. Give them a shout and they will fix you right up. Mine are about 4" deep to accomodate my stacks and are the largest that will fit the engine bay. My car is a 1966 and I moved my solenoid and regulator in order for the filters to fit. I later did away with the regulator when I changed from the generator to a Geo Metro alternator. Let us know how you are progressing!

I'm assuming that the base plate for the filters has the thru-holes for the screws and air pretty much centered. Can you relocate the holes (plug and cut new, or cut the base and reweld in a new offset location?)

David,

Thanks for the info! Progress on the engine can still be seen at Chris' site, he's going to bring it over on wednesday. I'll post the dyno results as soon as I get them.

Greg,

I had the same idea but my technical skills are not up to that (had my first welding lesson on wednesday, and it was very clear I need a lot of practice first!).

Cameron, if you read this, would you please tell which ones are on the engine that's shown on your site?

Thanks in advance,

Alexander
