MG MGB Technical - K & N which needle ?
Can anyone tell me which needles are recommend as a starting point for a 1976 mgb roadster with HIF carbs on a standard engine when K & N's have been fitted? thanks oscar |

The standard needles are normally AAU, it's necessary to put ABD and may be AAA. Regards |

Oscar My local specialist reccommended AAA for the 'deep' K+N filters. HTH Jason |

I went from ABD to AAA needles when I converted to the K&N "Bob" filters on HIF carbs. Barry |

If you found that a AAA needle was too rich, you might look at the P4 with one of Joe Curto's swing-needle-to-fixed-needle adapters. The P4 runs slightly richer than the original stock #5, but not nearly so much as the AAA. If the P4 doesn't do it for you, then try a #6 or CN, also both fixed needles. The #6 was the original rich needle, and a CN is somewhat richer still, but still not nearly as Rich as the AAA. The AAA is really quite a bit richer than the original #6 rich needle. For a direct view comparison, you can go to this site, http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/ , and enter in these needles to see their profiles graphically compared, or to research any others you might want to try. You only need an incremental change when running with K&Ns, not a big one. To get these "oddball" needles, I am afraid you'll probably have to get them straight from Burlen, the SU manufacturer, http://www.burlen.co.uk/ (go down to "needles, .90" fixed). 7.19 pounds ea. |
