MG MGB Technical - Lazy indicator
My Gt has developed a lazy indicator on right turns. It is working, just with a larger delay. Indicating left is as normal. Where is the best place to start looking? Thanks Graham |

Look for anything that will interrupt the ground current. ie: dirty wire bullet connectors, corroded lamp socket, etc. Try swapping bulbs from left side to right side to see if that changes anything as it could clue you into a bulb with changed resistance. |

Graham - Daniel is correct when saying to look for a high resistance connection. I would add two things, when I repaired a similiar problem on our daughter's GT, notheing changed when I cleaned everything, so I took a long piece of wire and started jumbering around each wire inthe circuit. I found one wire where the crimpped bullet on the end had developed a high resistance in the crimp. Cutting the bullet off an dsoldering a new on on cured the problem. More obscure still, was a lamp socket that had developed a high resistance where the two parts were crimpped together and was interupting the ground to the bulb. That one required a new lamp assembly. Good luck - Dave |

Cheers I'll start hunting around. Its worse in the wet....actually there is a whole host of faults in the wet. All part of the fun. You couldn't get a newer car home on careful choke control eh. To be expected on 30yr old electricals I expect. I took the loom out of the midget I am rebuilding and its burnt out all over the place with newer wires added here and there. A real mess, but it was working. |

High-resistance connection yes, not just the ground. Could also be a tired bulb. If the flashing changes rate depending on whether the parking lights are on, and it is a rubber bumper, then it could be either the bulb holder in the right rear or its fixings to the wing i.e. the ground, or the shared ground for indicators, front parking lights and headlights coming back from the right-hand headlight to the grounding point by the fusebox. If it is a chrome bumper and the same thing happens then it could be the bulb, holder, or fixings to the wing at the front. If the flashing rate is not affected by the parking lights being on then for a chrome bumper it is going to be the bulb, holder, or any connector in the green/white circuit from the indicator switch out towards either light unit. The ones at the front of the car are most likely to be the cause - by the right-hand headlight. |
