MG MGB Technical - Leak from fuel pump
My 78' MGB GT started leaking petrol and i expected it to need a new petroltank, however on closer inspection its seems to coming from the fuel pump. The fuel pump looks new so i'm guessing a seal or something needs replacing? the fuel pipes look fine and it appears to be leaking from where the unit goes into the tank. How easy should this be to resolve? |

Gavin - No part of the SU fuel pump goes into the tank, but the coil housing and end cap do protrude into the trunk (boot) on a 78. If the leak if from the small pipe that protrudes about 3/8" from the bottom of the coil housing (where the cast iron attaches to the aluminum portion of the pump), then your purblem is in all likelyhood a ruptured diaphragm. This can be resolved, but if you are a novice on the pumps, it would be well to find an expert or get a new pump (the diaphragm will cost half the price of a new pump plus labor to swap it out, adjust and test it). Good luck - Dave |

Are you confusing the pump with the fuel gauge sender unit, which does sit in the tank? |
Steve Postins |
Good observation Steve, I hadn't thought of that. Certainly makes it cheaper to repair if it is the sending unit gasket. Dave |

my fuel pump on 78 B "kips on ticking" even after i turned the ignation switch off. the fuel pump only cut off when battery lid is disconnected. could it be a faulty ignation switch? please help nate |

Nate - Your pump is either wired to the wrong place or there is a short somewhere for it to continue running with the ignition turned off. Good luck - Dave |
