MG MGB Technical - Location of fuel pump on CB cars

The fuel pump on my RB 1979 MGB is located partly in the trunk/boot and partly behind the battery box. Where is the fuel pump bracket for the chrome bumper cars mounted to?
Frank

Frank,

The fuel pump on my 68 is on the outboard side of the passenger (right) battery box. There are 2 studs attached to the panel just to the side of the battery box that rises almost vertically to create the shelf where the battery boxes are.

The pump bracket is mounted to the back of the interior panel above the rear floor. The end of the pump sticks thru a hole in the right side of the right battery box in front of the battery.

John,
Is it the electrical end of the fuel pump that sticks through into the battery box?
Frank

Yes it is whilst the fuel connections are towards the outside and in line for the pipe runs.

The RB pump is also above the level of the tank and so can be changed without petrol running out all the time (although there is a 'fix' for that on CB cars). Having its electrical end in the boot also means that it only has one vent tube, as opposed to the two on CB cars.

IF one has to move the location of a RB fuel pump can you move it to a similar location like the CB one and still use a late model pump(electronic) with only one vent tube?
Frank

Frank,

I wanted to move the pump in my '77 V8 conversion to the CB location as I used the wiring harness for the CB car. Bought the bracket, mounted it where the original sits and installed the pump.

Then I installed the rear sway bar..........."Two objects cannot occupy the same place at the same time". Maybe this is why the pump was moved into the trunk. The mount for the right side of bar will hit the pump. So into the trunk goes the pump and I just extended the wires. Works fine.

Anyone want a CB fuel pump bracket, painted, looks brand new?? Anyone??

Frank - The answer to you question is yes, the late model pump can be used in the CB position. All of the pumps used on the MGBs after about 1964 or 65 are the same. If your pump has a vent fitting on the end cover, it can be "Teed" together with the vent from the coil housing and the tube run into the trunk. It is not entirely necessary to run tubes from the vents into the trunk, but it does provide a somewhat dryer atmosphere for the vent air to be drawn from. Cheers - Dave

Hi Simon, sent you a pm

To add to what Dave has said if your pump doesn't have a vent pipe at the electrical end then it will be drawing in damp/dirty air, and that is regardless of whether it is electronic or not. Also the original CB pumps had seperate vent pipes going to different places in the boot - one in a bottom corner and one in a top corner. I believe this is to prevent fumes from a leaky diaphragm from having a short route into the electrical end of the pump, and being ignited by the spark of the original points. Probably not an issue with the after-market pumps with an electronic switch in place of points. However these should not be confused with the late model pumps containing an electronic diode for quenching, which are polarity concious, and which still have points and generate a spark.
