MG MGB Technical - looking for diagnosis
I just had my modified 79 B (though the reg plate says it's made in Dec 79) come back from a high end british car garage where it received a tune-up and an oil change .... it runs beautifully with only one concern ... to start it cold it takes a long time (ie ~8-9 secs of cranking). Hot starts are no problem ... just the cold ones ... snd since we are approaching the colder autumn season, I'm concerned. I can't find any diagnostic alogorithm in the Chilton or the Haynes for this one. It has 'mild road' cams, a pertronix in dizzy and that's about it. Thanks, Lance P.S. Can I find out exactly what model year my car is by the VIN ?? |

Lance. Look to the choke adjustment for your starting problem. If it still has a Z-S, I always had a problem getting mine started. Loaned it to my wife while she was in school in Denver (I was on a remote tour to Alaska). She chose to walk to classes rather than keep trying to get the B started. As to the exact "model year", there should be a sticker or plate on pillar behind the driver's door. If it shows the car made in Dec of 79 it would be, under US interpretation, an 80 model. Other places use the date of manufacture or the date of first registration to determine "the year" of the car. Where I live, the emissions are tighter for an 80 than for a 79, so your car, titled as a 79, would be better than your car titled as an 80 model. Les |
