MG MGB Technical - Loss Of Engine Power Under Load
I have a problem with loss of power when under load, even on a straight away I can not get above 55 mph. Once the car heats up if going up any type of incline I end up in first gear. I have been trying everything I can think of to test for the problem to include replacing the fuel pump (put a fuel filter between the tank and pump just in case I was getting slug from the tank)even put a spare carb on same result. At idle in the garage the rpms are steady, car runs geat with no problem. Timing is dead on, compression is good, carb has been adjusted to book settings, no vacum leaks I can find anywhere around the engine. Next step will be to blow air through the fuel tank vacum line to see if there are any obstructions causing a vacum lock. I rebuilt the engine using a 79 block (car is a 77 MGB) and can not remeber if the loss of power was evident when I completed the rebuid. "Any suggestions would be welcome at this point as I am at a lose to understand where or what the problem might be. Thanks, |

Jim, if you still have a catalytic converter on the car, you should check that it is not completely blocked up or broken in any way. That will certainly hinder your application of power. |
