MG MGB Technical - Lucas 45DM Distributor
good day, I wonder if any of you guys can tell me where in the UK I can get hold of parts (ignitor) or reconditioned distributor, the model Lucas 45DM4 is actually for a Lotus Esprit but my web search leads me the rubber bumpered MGB? Also a new amplifier unit (assuming this is the correct term! which goes between the dizzy and coil - controlling firing from the ignitor in the dizzy itself) also I should mention that the distributor unit does have vaccum advance fitted. any ideas please?! Thanks Ash |

Have you tried Aldon, Ash? http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/ |

The other way round this might be to fit the more common and reliable Lucas 25D4 provided that you select one which is close to the characteristics of your 45D. Then fit the Lumenition Magnetronic ignitor which is integral to the distributor. |

Hi Ash I have a 45DM4 fitted to my midget. I had loads of trouble with it misfiring, until I bought a new ignition module (not amplifier), it now works a treat. I'll get the part number for you if you want. I got mine from the loca motor factor, it costs about £25 though. Matt |

Ash. My daughter's 45DE4 distributor was equipped with a Luminition system when we purchased the car. So, I know they did make a replacement unit. The "Ignitor" in the UK is made by Petronix here in the US. Do a websearch on Petronix and it should take you to their home page, thence to their catalog. There are several sources, I have been told, of Ignitor systems in the UK and the least expensive would be the best one to shop through. Might also be possible to order directly from the US as the dollar continues to drop in value, the price may be significantly lower than the UK prices. Les |

The 45DM was only fitted to North American spec MGBs. The amplifiers were used on a lot of different cars and are still available from Transpo, for example, see http://www.transpo.de/cgi-win/product.exe?DM1906 This needs a magnetic pick-up inside the distributor (the amplifier is an external unit mounted on the inner wing). The pertronix ignitor is a different thing, mounts completely inside the cap and connects directly to the coil, and is usually used to replace points and condenser. It is available in the UK as the Aldon Ignitor and there is a Lumenition variant. If you fit either of these (or points and condenser FWIW) to a 45DM distributor you also have to fit the 'points' plate ground wire that is present on points systems or you are likely to get erratic firing due to a poor ground connection. |

The 45DM4 with the external amplier fitted between the coil and distributor is actually a unit made by Delco (General Motors). Lucas calls this the CEI system where the orginal manufacturer (Delco) calls it the HEI system. It you suspect that the four pronged module mounted inside of the box ( that is mounted beneath the coil) is bad, you can easily purchase another one on-line for approximately $35. General Motors installed this Delco unit on millions of their vehicles from the 70's onward. |

Hi--------- S Rechter if you read this,I would like to know where I can get that module that mounts inside the box under the coil. How about a name and phone 3 and where on line I can find it? Thanks----- Dale |
