MG MGB Technical - Lumenition or Aldon Ignitor?
Anyone got experience of either Lumenition optronic or Aldon Ignitor electronic ignition systems? The Aldon one is significantly cheaper and fits inside the dizzy and therefore keeps the original appearance, but is it more likely to overheat due to its location? I have 1964 +ve earth roadster with 25D4 dizzy if that is important! Thanks |

Mike, see the thread: The best Electronic ignition?? either on this bbs or the MGB General one. Substitute pertronix for Aldon in that discussion, and you can at least get a notion of Yank opinion of the ignitor setup. |

Hi Mike, In my honest opinion, neither, I believe the old Pirhana which is now called Newtronic is better than both. I fitted two Ignitors and popped them both with hardly any mileage on the clock. A friend of mine also had similar problems with the Magnetronic, (same as Ignitor only Luminition made.) The Luminition optronic is good but costs much more than the Newtronic, both operate by light interference. If you decide on Newtronic go for the Gold trigger version, which is equivalent to the Luminition sports at half the price. also the Newtronic can be mounted under the dashboard and so is virtually undetectable. I purchased mine directly from the makers, but it was marketed by Moss before their problems, don't know the situation there now. If you need more info send me an e-mail good luck Graham |

Thanks guys. I note from the latest Moss Europe price guide that the part no. for the piranha system is still listed, at just under £80. As they appear to carry several systems, I'll check them all out at the local Moss branch.... |

The Aldon unit works OK I use one in my race car. It was fitted by ENTUNE 2000 01204 573548. It has been in the car now for two years and I havn't had any problems with it. The other advantage with the Aldon unit is that it can be replaced in minutes with points. Also if yours is a show car no one can tell. peter |
