MG MGB Technical - Master cylinder comparisons
Any comments about original versus aftermarket master cylinders would be appreciated. Rgds |

Andy. I have used a TRW master cylinder on two cars. They seem to work quite well and can be had for significantly less than the Moss "OEM" master cylinders. Les |

Les, Are these TRW MC compatible with silicone brake fluid? Rgds. |

Guy. I have not used the silicone brake fluid in them. I use the Castrol LMA fluid in my cars. Les |

I have heard (but not had first hand experience) that they are not recommended with silicon fluid. Somenone had mentioned the box had a warning to that effect |

Silicon (DOT5) is less readily available in the UK these days. It isn't compatible with ABS systems, so an upgraded version of DOT4 has been developed with the boiling point of silicone if not higher. The bloody stupid thing is that this fluid has been designated DOT5.1! This implies it is a development of DOT5, but it isn't compatible with it and they shouldn't be mixed. It can be mixed with DOT4 though. Some manufacturers have taken the sensible decision to label the containers 'Super DOT4' to try and allay the confusion. |

Thanks, gents. Les, where did you buy the master cylinders? A quick 'net search did not turn up any obvious links. Rgds Andrew |

Andrew, Gordon at the B-Hive in South Carolina advertises the TRW masters. I suspect that Bob at Brit-Tek in New Hampshire also has them, or an equivalent. Both are good people to deal with. Charley |
