MG MGB Technical - MC Piston removal
Now that I have the master cylinder removed I find the piston hard to remove. Any suggestions? Thanks, guys! JOHN |

MC piston is locked in place by a circlips. Take it off and you 'll be able to withdraw your MC., not that hard to pull out off. My experience beiing based upon an MK1 simple MC. Regards. |

The easiest way to get a piston out is to bang it on the bench, when the cylinder hits, the piston keeps moving. |

John, I suspect you have the tandem MC without integrated warning switch (US model '68-'75). If so, then tapping the MC will probably not get the white guide bearing out (behind which another circlip is hidden, preventing the release of the piston). I drilled two small holes opposite each other in the bearing allowing me to screw in two screws and use these to pull the bearing out. The seal behind the bearing can be prised out easily. There is a good drawing of the MC in the Haynes manual, which is almost essential if you want to overhaul your MC. The pin which links the two pistons will be difficult to remove on your own, but impossible to replace...you need at least three hands. I managed to overhaul my MC, but it isn't something I would like to do again. If only new ones weren't so expensive... HTH, Rufus |
