MG MGB Technical - MG International Spares Day posse?
'lo all, I'm going to be at the International mg spares Day at Stoneleigh tomorrow, so if any of you spot me (I shall be sporting a Bush or Chimp? t-shirt) then say hi. Presumably they're using the main entrance, off the B4113, but if anyone knows otherwise... Maybe see some of you there! -- Olly S |

Oliver, why were you not sporting a T-shirt which shows Saddam with his electric jump leads, you know the sort we use to jump start our cars, but Saddam uses to torture the opposition. Also, why were you wearing a T-shirt which must mean you are either into gardening (bushes or shrubs) or fond of animals. Can't you make up your mind, perhaps. Am I being too naive. PS. I enjoyed Stoneleigh too, but did not find many low prices, or special offers around, or am I being doubly naive. |

Sorry, didn't mean to be political here. I found the show quite disappointing this year... the parking was a shambles, and as far as I could tell all the vendors were selling much the same as each other. There wasn't the usual showing of specialists, just a bunch of people selling embroidered jackets and cheap tools. All well and good, but I was hoping for something a bit more specific. However, I enjoyed seeing some of the nicer showcars and it was a good day out with some of my MG buddies still. ttfn, -- Olly |

Not having been to one before, I thought it was better value than the NEC venue (no car park charges, and reasonable food at reasonable prices). I was surprised to be kept waiting to enter, but being in an MG, and then being directed to the outside MG only parking area near the front door was rather nice for a quick return to dump things in the boot. My best bargains were used items off the small private entry stands. But I agree, the specialists all seemed to be displaying catalogue prices with no real discounts. There were sometimes too few stand staff for the number of people, and there was some big variance in pricing for similar products. Still, really enjoyed it, and didn't think there were too many obscure stands compared to some shows I have seen, but it was my first Stoneleigh! Martin |

It was my first visit to Stoneleigh. It was better than the NEC last Autumn, far more choice and more tailored to MG. Very impressed with the attendance, there must be a lot of MGs out there. Poor organisation for parking, why didn't they just use the main entrance rather than the mud track. Bargains were scattered, mainly tools. Still good to get a view of some specialist little companies. I'll go again next year especially as its only 20 miles away. Richard |

Did anybody notice the name of the company that supplies completely restored roadster windscreens? I believe that they had a display stand there. Angus. |

Parking (or more correctly the route to it) was even more of a shambles than usual and they always use the mud track. I found many of the usual specialists in the first hall, mainly non-MG specific stands in the second, and junk and cars for sale in the cattle shed. Beat one of the specialists down from £40 to £25 for a tonneau with a stuck zip that took a few minutes with some Vaseline ("You can always tell an Old Fart, they keep the Vaseline in the garage") to free up. Three roadster/V8 oil filters for 50p (OK, I got £5.50 'change' from a couple of MGOC Gift Tokens) and a bonnet release cable for a fiver which conveniently broke a few days before the show rather than a few days after which is what usually seems to happen. Most stands seem to sell the stuff VAT free, which has got to be good. My gunsons multimeter packed up a couple of weeks ago but I omitted to check prices beforehand. Retail they are £80-odd, cheapest web price was £50-odd, similar for a Draper equivalent, but the Draper was at the show for £25, grrr. |

Although I enjoyed Stoneleigh, I was a bit disappointed that quite a few traders were missing, such as Woollies, and I just got the impression that there were no real bargains there, notwithstanding Chris's comments before. Also last year, it seemed to be much bigger, particularly the number of cars on show. Is it worth going to The Spring Restoration Show at Stoneleigh in March. |

Apologies, should be: "notwithstanding Paul's comments before." Sorry Paul. |

I spent a little less than 100 quid mainly on some very useful good quality tools, trailer vehicle security straps and other bits and bobs. The three trailer straps I got there were better quality and about 50% of the price of a similar one I purchased locally in Glos at a trailer supplies outlet. In each case I was delighted to 'negotiate' a price somewhat lower than on the ticket ..... by waiting near to show closing time just before traders started to pack unsold items away. Two traders would not reduce their prices .. one understandably because the goods on offer were excellent value in the first place (no harm in asking?) whilst the other would not budge at all so I did not buy. Would I go again? Certainly ..... The drive round in the mud I could have done without, glad I took my workhorse Monty turbo ...... :O) JMcF |
