MG MGB Technical - MGB Battery number
Can anyone tell me the battery number for a 1974 B with a single 12v battery.Dimension would also bbe a great help. regards John |

John, try this link from Moss Europe, which gives the dimensions. http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/mg/mgb-c-v8/electrical/battery-cables/battery-12-volt-non-leak-mxv1129x.html Andy |

Thanks for the info Andy, What I was looking for was the number like "063" or "027". The reason I am asking is the car is down in the middle of France and I forgot to get the number and the dimensions. It's much cheaper to buy one in the UK than in France, apart from "Moss" that battery is very expensive, I think they are extracting the urine. |

John, there is more information about exide batteries and dimensions on this website http://www.v8register.net/subpages/V8NOTE329.htm It looks like the Exide Ultra 063 will fit. The 065 will also fit with a bit of a squeeze. This thread is relevant. http://www.mg-cars.net/mgb-technical-bbs/conversion-to-single-12v-battery-201301291612506864.htm Andy |

Thanks Andy, that just what I needed. I had a feeling the old battery was an 063.So now I will see what the motor factors can do for me. regards John |

Depends if the car is rubber bumper or chrome, i.e. originally had a single 12v or has been converted to single, as the battery needs to be smaller in the latter case - as a '1974' it could be either. Some 12v only fit an unmodified 6v cradle if the mounting ears on the bottom (of the battery - warranty issue) are cut off. |

Hi Paul, the car is a rubber bumper, built june 1974 but it's a LHD exported to the US. |

John, You could try Battery Mega store - they have a depot in France. A friend of mine used them for batteries for his canal boat in France. I've used them a couple of times in U.K and can confirm excellent service in U.K at least. R. |

Thanks Richard for the information, but I can get a battery locally for much less than that. I used have my own garage and I can still can get trade discount from a couple of motor factors. |

Do bear in mind that a single 063 will not produce the Ah as recommended in the manual and some will say an 063 (which commonly will be no more that ~45-50Ah, 400-440CCA) is underpowered. I just bought a Bosch S4 063 and am very pleased - plenty of capacity as far as I am concerned & just over £40 (although switch absulutely EVERYTHING on and the indicators do slow, but I also have fogs + electric fan). Bosch S5 is the dogs do-dahs powerwise, but price increases sharply. Centainly worth checking Eurocarparts, very competitive. http://www.eurocarparts.com/car-batteries Also, where is your battery? Mine has been relocated to under bonnet (passenger side by firewall) and an 065 was about the biggest that would fit past the air filters. However, as 063 seems to be more of a popular size, deals are better. Not sure what max size will go in the cage or a battery bin. G |

Also, Eurocarparts WWW has sizes published for you G |

Thanks for the info Graham, Eurocarparts is one of the factors that I can get trade discount. regards John |
