MG MGB Technical - MGB Front Fender

Can anyone tell me whether or not the front fender from a '74 GT will fit a '68 Roadster?

Thanks.

Most of it will fit but the big problem will be the upper rear of the wing. I think you can look at pictures in the catalogs to get the idea. I guess you could do it but if you are paying someone to install it then you will save large money to find the correct wing for the roadster.

The side light position may be different too. See Clausager. The older fender has the sidelight further outboard, with a more pronounced "plinth" I believe.

JR,
The fenders are not inchangeable without a tremendous amount of work. The way to do it with the least effort would be to graft the rear portion of Roadster wing to the front portion of a GT wing. At the rear edge of the wing, where it mates with the cowl, a GT wing will dodge to the outside to avoid the integral windscreen frame. A roadster's wing, on the other hand, goes straight back (or nearly so -- haven't seen one off the car in a while...) and the aluminium windscreen post goes down through a hole in the wing.

If you have a GT wing, I suppose you could cut small patch panels from it to repair your roadster wing. Much, much more preferrable though is to sell the GT wing to a GT owner and use the proceeds to purchase the proper wing. The GT owner will be grateful, and your results will be much better...

HTH!

The side lights didn't appear until 1970, so JR would have to fill the holes in to match the appearance of his '68 roadster.

Oh, wait a minute. You're talking about the turn signal/parking lights on the front, below the headlights, aren't you. I believe that the change you refer to took place sometime around 1965 or 66, so the position would be the same between a '68 and a '74 fender.

I think that the differences between a roadster and GT fender would be much more of a problem.

Thanks all for the info. Hopefully, I'll be able to get into my storage shed tomorrow(excess snow) and "Eyeball" the fender, to see what the differences are. Thanks again.

the differences are toward the rear of the wing at the top as pointed out by Rob Edwards. There is a hole in the roadster wing for the windscreen and the top edge of the GT fender is shaped differently to accomodate the windscreen pillar. It would involve a lot of work and grafting use one on the other. Try to find a roadster fender if that's what you need and save that GT fender for someone who can use it- they are kind of hard to find sometimes.

Sorry Paul, the change took place in 1969, so a 68 should have the older style turn signal.
