MG MGB Technical - MGB-GT body trim and windshield

Hi, guys. Just bought a '67 GT in need of some bodywork. First I want to remove the horizontal trim on the left rear fender. Looks like the rear end of the trim is held on with a nut and washer inside the fender. Are there any more nuts on this piece? How do you get it off the other fasteners?

Next question is the windshield seal. It seems to have shrunk, because there is a small gap between the top of the seal and the roof. And the rubber is dry and cracked, so I thought I would replace the seal and see if the frame needs attention. I have replaced seals on other cars, but Moss shows a seal and a "filler" piece in addition to the trim. Anyone done this before who can shed some light on the procedure? Thanks.

Really looking forward to getting this beauty on the road. -Glenn.

Hi Glenn

There is only one 'T' bolt for each piece of side trim. Undo this, and the rest is held on by buttons pop riveted to the panel. Use a putty knife or similar to prise the trim off the button.

If the wind screen rubber is had it, do not try to remove the metal trim from it. Cut the rubber away from the trim to release it.

The filler piece expands the new rubber into place. and is best inserted using a tool made for this job. It is possible to put it in using a collection of screwdrivers, cussing and swearing however.

Others may help with this....

Thanks, Ian. I checked the archives and found quite a bit of info on the windshield. Also, my mgb books arrived from Amazon.com yesterday, and there is a picture of a tool being used to install the rubber filler piece. It looks like it would be fairly easy to recreate the tool using stainless steel wire and a wallpaper seam roller. -G.

Try to get your new rubber seals from MacGregor. They seem to have a bit wider channel for the chrome trim that makes the reinstall easier.
