MG MGB Technical - MGB GT resto
hey, I'm new to the MG world. I bought a beater '70 GT for the hell of it to restore and I'm finding I have no damned clue what I'm doing! the motor *seems* to be in fine condition... minus an alternator and a belt. the body is a little rusty... almost all surface rust. however the floorboards are rusted out and the interior was toast save the dash... the dash is near perfect. regardless, I could use any tips anyone has as to where to start, places to get parts (especially in Seattle) etc. |

Chris - To get together with others who own MG and are familiar with the repair, maintenance and restoration of the cars, contact the MG Car Club Northwest Centre in Seattle <http://www.mgccnwc.com/>. Good luck - Dave |

Go to www.mgbexperience.com that site will direct you to many other sites. There is a section in there that talks about good books to get. I think the first book I would get would be a copy of the DIY guide now called the mgb restoration Guide by Lindsay Porter. This book will be very valuable to helping you assess the car and where to start. The Haynes Manual will help you a lot at the start you might want to try and get a factory manual reprint from Bentley. |

Chris, for parts - go see Rusty over in West Seattle on Avalon Way - British Auto Center. I have purchased parts for my B as well as parts for the xj6 I used to own. He has everything at reasonable prices. Alan |

Do join the local MG club and plan to go to the ABFM in Bellevue in July. There is a fairly good parts swap meet at the event. Date and time is on the mgccnwc web site. The local club also holds tech sessions during the year. It is a good place to meet other members, local shops and learn a little in the process. |

Welcome! You've made two very smart moves- you bought an MG and you found this website. As mentioned above get the Lindsey Porter book. Go to http://www.mossmotors.com and http://www.victoriabritish.com and request a catalog from each. They have very good diagrams of things and how they go together that will be invaluable. Also locate a Haynes manual for MGB's The suggestion about joiing a local club is about the best one made. There is nothing like getting together with people who have been where you are now and have learned firsthand by doing what you are attempting. Good Luck!! |
