MG MGB Technical - MGB Newbie Stupid Questions

OK, I've popped over here from midgetland because I've just sold my Midget race car. One of the options for a new racer is an MGB - probably a GT because they seem cheaper and a bit more unusual!

Looking at prices, I've seen RB cars a lot cheaper than CB. Given that springs & shocks will be replaced for comp use anyway, is it a sensible/feasible plan to use an RB shell? I know on Midgets we could cut out the internal bumper strengthening. What's the steer with Bs?

Any help gratefully received. I raced a B roadster 30 years ago and appear to have forgotten everything I knew...

Yes, it's sensible, and there some advantages.

If you're Max T., then e-mail me (you've got my address, that's a clue!) ... Might be able to help.

OD switch on gearbox (£40 saving!)
radiator further forward (easier to box in)
underslung oil cooler (doesn't obstruct radiator)
collapsible steering column
dual line brakes on really late ones
pedal box is the other way round, so it is easier to make up a dual cyliner system I would imagine
clock (without second hand...), useful for lap times!

you can take all of the bumper stuff off

not sure whether the cross member is different, but I'm sure you can get it low enough

A RB crossmember has a 1 inch or so bit attached to it to increase ride height. You can fit lowered springs but you'll end up with non flat A arms. Another option is fitting dropped spindles. You can fit a CB crossmember to a RB car but it takes some fiddling of the steering system.

At the rear the spring hangers are in a different location to also raise the car an inch there. Again you can use lowered springs or modify the mounting points and remove the RB bump stop mounting points. All this lowering gets you down to CB heights.

To go from there even lower I think takes even more work.

Bumpers aren't a problem. Just unbolt the rubber bumpers and off you go! At the front you may want to cut off the RB mounting points so they don't stick out past the front valence.
