MG MGB Technical - mgb starter runon

My 67 Mgb has an intermittent problem in that the starter will keep spinning after relase of the key switch. This happens about every 12 starts. I have replaced the starter solenoid but it happened again last night. I have to cycle the key switch on an off to stop it. I have replaced the ignition switch about 1 year ago with a 15 dollar generic switch. Could it be a short in the ignition switch? HELP A DAILY DRIVER.

Yes it could well be your switch. Try disconnecting your switch and hotwiring the car to see if it happens then.

If you are still using the original design starter, the problem could well be a worn starter drive assembly. This will manifest itself periodically when the drive engages a worn part of the ring gear. Usually, the momentum of the engine starting will force the the starter drive away from the ring gear, but a worn starter drive will jam itself into the ring gear and fail to release upon starting. A through inspection of the starter gear and the flywheel ring gear is in order. Ray

If the starter is still being *electrically* powered, as seems the case, and cycling the ignition switch on and off stops it, then it is almost certainly the switch. Just disconnect the white/red near the ignition switch (should be a handy bullet connector). If that stops it then it confirms the switch. If it *doesn't* then that wire could be shorting to the battery cable stud on the solenoid or the solenoid could be sticking. If a voltmeter temporarily attached to the white/red shows 12v whwen you have released the key and the starter is still powered then the problem is electrical on that wire. If the 12v disappears when you release the key but the starter is still powered, then it is the solenoid sticking.
