MG MGB Technical - MGB Steering rack plunger
Does anyone know where I can get a new MGB Steering rack plunger for a 78 GT please? Thank you Paul |

Internal parts would probably have to come from a second-hand unit, I've not seen them available separately. Preferable to replacing the rack complete, that can be a long job getting the alignments correct. |

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. 👍 |

depends on what you're calling the plunger--- If it's the curved bottom yolk part ,i think that's no longer available but if you mean the little spring loaded brass wear pad, most MG suppliers should have that, it's common to a lot of racks, mgtd-MGB, midget mini Austin healey etc https://mossmotors.com/262-190-pad-rack-damper If you hunt around you'll probably find a cheaper price, it's also known as -ACA5244-, maybe B&G or your local mini resto place would have them/it |

Yes William - both the pad and the carrier ... but the pad is a start. Thanks Paul |

With the carrier/yolk- That's adjustable with the shim pack---unless it's really badly worn out of course. If you're chasing rattles, are you sure it's not up in the column itself, they're well known for wearing/breaking the plastic antirattle pads in there. A sign of that is a slight radial play/clunk at the steering wheel. |

Hi William It is for a friend's car - his is OK but has a chip off on of the shoulders. Paul |

How much of the yoke is missing? Did he just spot it by chance or was it causing a problem? |

Spotted by chance when he was looking for something else. Wasn't causing a problem but I am going to guess it would be best put back in the same orientation it was withdrawn to ensure it continues not to be a problem. Paul |

If it's not gouged the rack it stands a good chance of being OK. |

Thanks :) |

I have found that the Argentine racks sold by Moss are light weight, long lasting and inexpensive. Best to replace it altogether for long term results. I have put 150,000 miles on mine and it is like new. |

I've read complaints about those here and elsewhere if they are the ones with the screw adjuster on the damper cover, incorrectly assembled and missing parts. It's why I opted for a rebuilt original with shims. |
