MG MGB Technical - MGB water temperature (thermocouple) sensor

Hello,

The connection to the water temperature sensor in the cylinder head was cut off when I bought my mgb roadster.

When I had the engine refurbished by someone (who wasn't to be recommended), he said that he would leave the device as it was, as any efforts to remove the fixing and replace this device may cause problems with sealing issues later on. Naively, I followed this advice, but now I have realised that without this device functioning my temperature gauge on the dash won'y work.

My question therefore is: Is there any other easy way of connecting a temperature sensor into the water circuit if I cannot get the old unit out?

Many thanks

Why won't it come out? Why should it be a problem if it did?
If the capillary tube is cut, then the gauge needs reconditioning/replacing and will come with a new end on it that simply screws into the head where the old one came out of. Make sure you nip the new one in tightish without going silly and you'll be fine.
This is all assuming you're talking about the tube type and not the electronic one used in later cars >77

If the tube has been cut, it should be easy to fit a 5/8" socket over the tube nut and remove it. It may need some penetratring oil, but should come out relatively easily.

I've never had any sealing issues when replacing one, but if I did, I would address them when they arose and not worry about them in advance.

The tube nut has been removed, but it still won't come out, I assume I will have to drill it out. I was just a bit concerned about debris going into the cooling channels.

if you remove the thermostat housing and the thermostat aswell, you can get to the back of the bulb, that way you can tap it out from the back, or if you do drill it you can collect the debris, A.T
