MG MGB Technical - MGBGT date of birth?
I have just come into possession of a MGBGT. It is a straight little car with almost no rust even though it has been out in the elements. I have found the car number to be GHD4U/141144 G. I do not yet have the block with that ID. Can anyone tell me what is the year of manufacture? Thanks for any help! John 1954 mgtf 1960 MGA Coupe 1962 MGA Roadster |

A GHD4 prefix indicates a Mk II car, 1968 or 1969 model year, built between late 1967 and late 1969. For a more accurate date and description of your car, you can get a certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, that will show the exact date of final assembly, factory options, original color and engine, axle and transmission numbers. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/namgar/bmiht/bmiht.htm In 1969, they put non-illuminated reflectors on the sides of the front fenders. Other than that, I'm not sure of any significant differences between a 68 and a 69. Cars prior to 68 had a prefix of GHD3, while cars beginning with the 1970 model year were GHD5. What is the engine mumber? Paul Noble |

Thanks for the information. Paul, I don't have the block yet. Supposedly the engine has been totally rebuilt. I have all the engine parts except the block. As soon as I get I will let you know. Thanks again! John |
