MG MGB Technical - mgbgt selt belt boss
I'm finally replacing my worn and difficult to use sest belts in my 69 gt. I bought the 3 point inertia (expensive) ones from Moss. Moss says these belts will fit later model cars and new seat bosses are required for the 69. So I bought those as well. After the parts arrived, I looked over the setup and realized of course that I have bosses already on the upper wheel arches. Duh. Anyway, apparently the problem is the existing bosses are located too far outward to allow space for the inertia wheel. Anybody have this problem? Did you remove your bosses and replace them? (seems like alot of work). Or did you fabricate a offset bracket? Bill |

Update: I checked with Moss again. Looks like they sell a bracket for this (222-158 or BMH9514/5 Bracket Set). Although this part is currently not listed online, you can in fact order it. Matter closed. Bill |

Later cars did have the bosses set right at the back, ironically GTs kept them in the forward location even though they weren't used anyway! I'd be wary of using a bracket on the forward bosses to set the reel back, it and the arch would have to be pretty tough not to allow the reel to pivot forwards in an impact. Using a *second* attachment at the back with a strengthening plate on the other side of the arch should be OK, I'd have thought. |

Paul, I don't quite follow you. What do you mean by forward location? Aside from the bosses at seat level, my gt has bosses at the corner where the wheel well meets the raised deck and another one on the top of the wheel well (12 o'clock). It's the latter one where the seat belts and bracket are to be used. According to Moss, these brackets were original. They are _/- in shape. They raise and move the reel forward a tad. This is supposed to allow it to clear the trim just under the window. Regards, Bill |

Ah great, I've been looking for those brackets. My car has been fitted with Ford belts at some stage which fit and work pretty much as the original belts but don't have a separate bracket. They're getting a bit old, so I bought a nearly new set of Britax belts taken from a midget, but they lack the z-shaped bracket. Another one for the shopping list! |

GTs and early roadster seem to have the boss about 1/3rd the way from the front of the arch to where it meets the rear bulkhead, at about GT seat pad level. Later roadsters have it very close to where the arch meets the bulkhead. The exception is a 65 roadster which seems to have them between those two! As many American cars only seem to have lap belts originally, with owners saying there is no boss there (despite Clausager implying that all MGBs always had the three mounting points), this 65 may have had its boss installed by a dealer or PO. The top bosses on GTs for inertia reels are self-explanatory, but I don't understand where your "bosses at the corner where the wheel well meets the raised deck" are (photo?), and indicates your GT has three sets, which is a first for me! Unless you mean behind the rear seat back. Moss Europe lists the brackets you mention, no drawing though, http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop/viewproducts.aspx?plateindexID=270, as well as the roadster brackets. They also seem to have the quick release fasteners for the original static belts that mounted to the tonneau panel which I have never seen anywhere else, also a slotted 'belt park' bracket also new to me, and the little hook which I have seen. |
