MG MGB Technical - Miata gearbox in a 'B?

Anyone ever heard of this conversion?

I contacted the seller and so far I've managed to pick this from his brain.

"My friend, who is a good mechanic, did the job on many cars, you have to fit the ring gear, put a Miata starter, a new trans support, shorten the driving shaft, etc, made it 5 years ago and very easy to shift since then......."

Anyone know anything else?

I've installed a late 280z (1981) trans and it works great. It is closer ratio and has a higher o'drive/5th gear ratio. It is much lighter than the overdrive trans and kits are available. Check the archives for more info.

They are cheap and there are kits out there to do the conversion.

Toyota supra box,
Very strong, very smooth, about 20kg lighter and is smaller than the MG box, so it fits. The W58 is the best one.
I'm using it behind a V8, but Dellow also does MGB 1800 Bell housings.

I have a 280ZX 5 speed in my GT. The PO installed it using a Novus kit about 10 years ago. He had a heck of a time because the supplied back plate was poorly made. He finally got it straightened out and the box works great. The ratios are good and it shifts well. The only problems are that the PO didn't change the master cylinder diameter and the clutch will go over center if the (very stiff) clutch pedal is fully depressed. That's an easy fix but I've just lived with it as he did. The other thing is that the box rattles when in neutral like most Z gearboxes of that vintage do.

I've managed to get my hands on the phone number for the guy who did the installation. Haven't called yet.

In the meantime, would anyone happen to have a 'B box on the floor to take some dimensions? Bellhousing to drive flange and bellhousing to shifter?

Thanks in advance.

The dimensions will vary depending on whether it is 3 or 4 synchro, O/D or non-O/D.

I can't get that link to work.
Can you supply the item number on its own?

I recently acquired a gearbox from a Nissan 200SX, which would appear to be slightly shorter than a 'B' 'box. I just need to sort out the propshaft and speedo drive, plus a gearlever, along with an adaptor plate.

The clutch slave cylinder mounts look pretty similar, on initial inspection.

Perhaps I can get this to work, then sell the 3-synchro O/D 'box that I was planning to fit. Any takers?

The auction's over and the link didn't work for me either. But I think it'll work with item #130089568184. I don't know, but maybe you'll have to go on www.ebay.com and not www.ebay.co.uk
