MG MGB Technical - Mikuni carbs

Does anyone have experience of fitting Mikuni carbs to a B ? If yes, please advise what model Mikuni carb, air filter and inlet manifold was used.

Mikuni does not make a carb kit for the MGB any longer. They used to make a kit including PHH44 carb. If you look in the archives, there is some information. The carb has many application, Toyotas, Datsuns, and Mazda´s as well. The Mikuni carb uses a manifold similar to Weber, and could be inter-changed. The Mikuni manifold as a tap on the top of each leg, to balance the induction pulses.

I just finished setting one up, and am very pleased. Does it make more horsepower than an SU, I am not sure. I do not have access to a Dyno, where I am located. What it does have is nice throttle response and feels very nice in the midrange. The induction growl is a bonus.

The original filter is a relatively small K&N oval. I fabricated an intake system that terminates in front to the left of the radiator with a conical K&N. If you want I could send some pictures.

the Mikuni PHH is a license built Solex PHH used on many cars in the 1970's (VW K70, BMW 2000, 2002, NSU, Toyota, Nissan and even some Volvos).
I tried it once on my B (Special Tuning Stage 6) and changed to HIF6 that work better than the Weber or Mikuni for my feeling and delivers the same power as long as you do not need the special punch during excellerating.

Comparing the Solex/Mikuni to the Weber, it seems to be a little more effective as it does not use a choke butterfly although it is easier to rejet a Weber, so there are some other facts to be considered.

If you think of a Mikuni from the motorcycle range you will have to do a lot of testing for findig the right setup for a B.

Hello John,

There were many stories here in fitting a Honda prelude 1985 jap. carb. for a MGB. But I never saw it efficient in reality.
It is the same story with mikuni for a MGB. It needs a lot of knowledge to achieve a decent set-up.

I bought a Mikuni PHH44 a while back from Ebay, no air filter unfortunately, but it does have a manifold with it and was allegedly jetted for a MGB. Haven't had the nerve to fit it yet... my excuse is the throttle lever/linkage is missing, easy to make one but just haven't had the time.
