MG MGB Technical - Missing grommett ~ how do I mount fuel pump?
Hello all, My 1977 MGB has a cheap aftermarket fuel pump. I want to replace it with an SU pump. However, I find the rubber mounting grommett (this pump fits through a hole in the trunk area) is not available. Does anyone have an alternative way to mount the pump? Thanks in advance. David PS I'm interested in buying a fuel pump with slip-on banjo fittings as well. |

David - One would think that something that had been seen less than a day ago would be easy to recall - alas, such is not the case and I have not been able to find it anywhere. Thank you for the input Dave. I wonder If I could mount it like the earlier models, those parts are available new. I did find one of the later model mounting grommetts on EBay, about $20 with shipping for a used one, quite expensive that. |

I reckon you could, bolting it to the floor using the earlier bracket. You would need to make sure the grommet was padded out enough to seal the hole against water ingress. |

David, Not sure what the 1977 bracket looks like having a 1974 car myself, but you could cut (multipal) strips of rubber from an old tire inner tube the width of the bracket to form a snug fit around the pump. You might then glue the strips together, and to the bracket with contact cement to hold in place. For the banjo fittings on the pump you might try your NAPA, or other good local parts store. I would recommend walking in with the pump in hand, most are very helpful sourcing this type of part. Regards, Larry C. '74 B/GT, and '69 midget |

The point is that rubber bumper cars don't have a bracket like the chrome bumper cars do. The grommet referenced pushes through a hole in the front wall of the boot and locates the edge of the hole in a groove in the grommet. The pump pushes through the grommet, and a large worm-clip clamps the grommet onto the pump body inside the boot. Don't know how many that seller has (it is used) but $10 (at the moment) sounds cheap to me, considering they are NLA. |

Paul, Thanks for the clarification concerning the later model cars, and as you point out ($10) used may well be worth the price. Further, could a patch be made to cover the original fuel pump opening into the boot, and use an earlier bracket/grommet be installed on a later car by simply through-bolting the old style bracket in the location used on the earlier cars? Retrograde step, the beauty of the RB pump is the accessibility of the electrics end and the fact that working on the unions results in no siphoning as they are above the tank. The only advantage of the CB pump location is that I was able to change it with the car standing on its wheels when it failed on soft ground - you wouldn't be able to do that as easily on an RB. If I couldn't get the pukka grommet I'd explore other means of mounting and sealing it in its original location before I resorted to drilling holes to mount it elsewhere. |
