MG MGB Technical - Modifying heat sheild, Pipercross Air Rams/Socks

I run a kit-car with a Morris Marina 1800 twin HS4's engine, and am still trying to find a solution to my lack of air-filters/room problem.

The first question is can I modify the center of the heatsheild so that the accelerator cable moves backwards allowing me to fit MGA 1/4" spacers rather than the 'B 1/2" spacers? This would move the carbs closer to the engine and remove the heat shroud from the center (a bit like the MGA heat sheilds) but leave the float chamber sections intact. Will this adversly effect the performance of the carbs in anyway?

Secondly, Due to the space restrictions the Ram pipes from PiperCross with their Socks look like the best solution to filtration/space problem at present, does anyone know anything about these? is this a viable option for road use?

Thank you as ever :)

I'm not famniliar with the ram pipes, but the heat shield can be trimmed. Aren't the 1/4" spacers for 1 1/4" carbs? You are running 1 1/2" carbs, right? There will be a little throttle response change from shortening the intake runner length, but maybe for the better. It shouldn't be a problem.

Do the ram pipes have a foam filter? If so, I used to run a foam filter on an old hot rod and it worked out fine for daily driving. Not much of a performance item though.

Hi Stefan

On my midget I have the PiperCross ram pipes and socks which I installed to replace the absymally ugly filters which a DPO had installed. I wanted something that would look good for show days (the ram pipes) and didn't want the engine inhaling bugs and sand (hence the socks).

As a nice bonus there is a healthy-sounding 'whoosh' of air when I step on the loud pedal.

That sounds jolly good to me :)

The 1/4" spacers are for HS4's (what I have) but were found on the MGA I believe. Putting them on will enable me to push the carbs closer to the engine. I wasn't sure of the repurcushions of this - reading about throttle response reminds me however.

Thank you!
