MG MGB Technical - Moss Stromberg/SU replacement?
Hi All Went to Buttonwillow today and had a great time,I got the new Moss catalog and they are now selling a SU replacement for the Stromberg BUT they want $500 for it!Does anyone know exactly which SU it is and can they be found either used or for less $$$...?They also are in the process of making a SUPERCHARGER for the B It looked great! It will come with an alternator, water pump and a serpentine belt...The only drawbwck I could see was the $2800 pricetag but the rep said they dyno'd it at 110 hp at the rear wheels doubling the HP!I'll bet we will start seeing them in the future. There was a be-you-ti-ful red'72 B Roadster that came down from the bay area it had the sebring kit front and rear, leather interior, seams filled 15" Panasports with a slight flair All in all a very nice car as it should be,because the owner said he has put $19,000 in it!The weather wasn't too bad and some nice cars and races Pat |

The SU is an HIF 44...but can't seem to find many people with experience with this carb to find out if it is a suitable replacement. |

Patrick, I used an 1 3/4" HIF off of a '74 Austin [yes Austin] Marina. It definitely worked better than the SZ. But anxious for more power, I install twin HS4's. But it does bolt right on the original manifold. Dwight |

This thread brings up an interesting question. Based on the appearance in the most recent Moss Catalogue (pages 8-9) it would appear that the HS6 carburetor used on the TR250-6 conversion from ZS and the HS6 used on the upgrade to two 1.75" carbs for the MGB both have the same manifold side mounting plate as the ZS carb and differ from the SU HIF 44 in that the air filter side mounting plates are not the same. I would assume from this that the new manifold provided with the MGB 1-3/4" SU carb conversion has mounting plates that would accept either HS6's, HIF 44's or even dual ZS 1.75's if one elected to go this route. Is there anyone out there that has gone the dual HS6's that can confirm this to be correct? |

I saw the replacement carb for the ZS in the Victoria British catlogue a while back and was interested in replacing the carb on my 79 MGB. I was also surprised with the cost the replacement kit which is a HIF44. I purchased one from Burlen Ltd. in the UK which manufactures the SU carbs. I was able to get it from them directly and saved some $$. I don't have it up and running yet, but the carb bolted on with just a little modification of the the throttle cable mounting. I had to install the Manual choke cable that is included with the kit as well. I have a K&N air filter for the installation. It is a cone shaped filter for the 1 3/4" carbs kit number 56-9330. I had to drill one extra hole in the air filter housing to accomodate one passage that was vented to the air cleaner Hope this helps. Steve |
