MG MGB Technical - Mountney steering wheels
I had bought the black leather-wrapped Mountney (made in UK) 14" steering wheel from Victoria British, VB part #15-575 and it does not fit. My mechanic says I should not expect a perfectly flush fit with any aftermarket wheel, but the appx. 5/8" clearance between the bottom of the hub and the steering column cowling is not acceptable, even to him, AND even though my mechanic tightened it as much as he dared, the wheel jiggles. He says the VB 1970 model, part #15-571, may be the appropriate wheel, because the hub on this one is simply too short. So, VB is going to get back with me "NLT Thursday" with the measurement of the other wheel. Has anyone any experience or suggestions on "mounting" a Mountney Wheel? |

Is it possible some of the extra cleaarance is because of the plastic shield mounting low on the column? This registers off the directional switch assembly which clamps to the column and could slip back a bit. |

Unfortunately, that doen't address the issue that the wheel can't be properly secured to the column. Needs more distance from top to bottom on the splines and the nut needs to clear the top of the column. |

I had this happen on an Momo wheel and hub. Well, if I am understand the problem correctly. Mine was that the hole in the hub just below the splined section was too narrow so the column was binding on it and not going on far enough. The hub was too far away for the indicator stalks to reach teh mechanism. The splines would engage but then the unsplined part of the column would bind on the unsplined part of the hub. I ended up turning the hub on a lathe to make the unsplined part of the hole bigger. The hub then fit further down the column and all the splines engaged correctlty and the little indicator cancelling pegs could reach the switch OK. Simon |

My Moto Lita fitted perfectly. Which wheel to buy and the price of steering wheels has been a topic before. |

No experience with a Mountney, but I installed a Mota Lita on a 68 a few years ago. If you have the 69 OE steering column you may have been sent the wrong hub. When I ordered my Mota Lita hub from Jeff Zorn at LBC I had to provide the shaft diameter and the spline count get the correct hub fit. 68 and 69 USA MGB's have a different column shaft diameter so other year hubs including the 70 hub will not fit. You may have problems getting a correct answer from Victoria British, they are nice people but they don't know MG's as well as some of the other parts suppliers. Clifton |

My Mountney has a hub with a 2" height. Fits within 1/4" of the plastic housing for the turn signals. This is on a '77 which is different from yours, but I thought the dimensions might help. Good luck |

Had the same problem with a mountney on a '71 US-spec B. We put the hub on a lathe and turned the taper out to the right size. Not sure if it's just bad quality or if the US columns are a different size to UK ones. hth, -- Olly |

By way of balance, I've had 2 Mountney's with no problems on UK columns. |

The problem has turned out to be that VB sent the wrong hub set ("boss adaptor"). The one they sent is for a Triumph, not the MGB. Pure carelessness. |

I have a Mountney leather wrapped steering wheel on my 74.5 mgb roadster. There is a little more space between the plastic cowl and the wheel than with the stock steering wheel, (about 1/2 inch) however it isn't noticable. It does fit tight and secure but is a little harder to steer due to the smaller diameter of the wheel. I am pleased with it. |

VB expressed the correct boss. All is right with the world now, at least my MGB world. |
