MG MGB Technical - Mystery Tube...
I'm tearing down my '73BGT for body rework. I found a disconnected tube that I have no clue what it is for. It looks like vacuum hose or windshield washer spray tubing. The tube originated (ended?) in the trunk (boot) area at a two-way tee fitting made out of plastic, grommet-mounted to the floor. Under the car, it ran along the battery box and into the passenger side frame rail and disappeared. I'm sure whatever it was connected to is long gone, probably in both ends. Just curious as to what this thing was... er... is... Anyone know what this was used for? or what the other end was connected to? Cheers! Dave |

Dave, It sounds like you found the vent tube for fuel pump. The T-fitting in the boot is correct and should not have anything else connected to it. The "T" just keeps stuff from falling in and clogging it up. The other end should connect to a little fitting on the SU fuel pump. Often times a PO will forget to hook it up again after fiddling with the pump. Of course if you have a non-original type pump then you will have nothing to hook it to. -Jared |

So, what is the tube for and where does it go to? I re-fitted my pump and have the tube hanging loose in the area. Should it be hooked up to the T-fitting? What happens if it isn't? |

My UK 73 has two pipes, one from the pump body and one from the electrical end. Strangely they are different bores with different-sized T-pieces. As above it is a vent or breather tube to allow the pressures in the pump to equalise and not restrict the movement of the diaphragm. If not connected, or if the open end is dangling in the wet and dirt, it could suck said dirt and wet into the pump. The pipes and Tees should be secured near the right front bottom corner of the boot/trunk. |
