MG MGB Technical - New Exhaust Results
Just a few notes from replacing my 72 mgb roadster exhaust. I bought from the manifold back from catalog. It was recommended here that I take this job to a muffler shop. Glad I did. Someone had already broken off the manifold studs, drilled them out and replaced with Alen head cap bolts. We got a couple broke free but, 3 ended up having to be cut off with a torch. The new studs I bought didn't have any threads to be put into, so we had to go buy through bolts and nuts. I also brought the manual and catalog. Lucky I did because the catalog was the only diagram I could find on how to assemble the center and rear hangers assemblies. They just give you a bag of parts. The hangers that were on there were hobbled together with angle iron et and no way resembled OEM parts. The new down pipe, 1st and 2nd exhaust are on and sounds much better. The PDO had cut the down pipe and just a straight pipe back to small cylidrical muffler in the back just before tail pipe. Sounded very tinny and mounts allowed it to bang against bottom of car. All the hangers are correct now. The system as originally designed, and checked for NO leaks. On with the from suspension rebuild. Best regards, Doug A |

I also wanted to add that the center and rear mufflers were a bit long so the position relative to hanger positions were off. My buddy at the shop had to use a cut off saw to shorten the pieces so when attached to down pipe and each other, they all were aligned to body correctly and positioned correctly for OEM hanger assemblies. So, if you don't have the cut off saws and flaring tools, this is a bit much to do at home. Hope this saves someone else deciding what to do at home versus taking to shop. Best regards, Doug |
