MG MGB Technical - New headlight rings
Hello, Does anybody know an easy way to install new chrome headlight rings? I have tryed but started to scratch my paint. Could use some advice. Regards, Kelvin |

Locate new ring at top oh headlight (lugs are there on inner ring) and gently ensure that ring is centred correctly. The press FIRMLY at bottom of ring to snap it into place...should be quite simple, and no need to catch paintwork at all Hope this helps... |

Unless you have fitted new wings! |

I would add 'press down on the top of the ring before pushing the bottom backwards'. But if you have replaced the bowls as well then more work is required. |

Hi, Have new bowls and wings. Kelvin |

Had the same "challenge", and for me the job of re-installing the windscreen on the car on my own was easier than fitting the headlamp rings..... a real nightmare. As many replacement parts, the rings I bought did not have a good fit, and original Lucas rings are nla. I ended up bending over the edge of the bowls, smeared some Waxoyl on them, hooked the rings in place on top as described by Bob and Paul, and literally knocked the rings on, with a piece of wood at the bottom. Since then I notice these rings do not sit very well on many B's that I happen to see, many of them have a gap at the bottom. |

IME the new bowls even from the MGOC contain the wrong fitting at the bottom - being the threaded piece used on other applications and not the spring-clip needed for the B. I was lucky, my springs were good enough to swap over and I noticed before slinging the old bowls ... I take it you have the rubber gasket between bowl and wing, if so there should be no contact between ring and wing. |

Even using new springs instead of the threaded item ( as supplied by MGB Hive ), I found that the headlamp rim is too close to the wing at the inner side - nearest the bonnet, it seems like the profile of the lamp cutout is all wrong. If anybody fits new wings, try fitting the lamps before you paint them. |

You're right as far as my V8 goes, Tatty, I had forgotten that. The oldish rings on that have been flattened a little at that point. But I had no problem with the new rings on my roadster. Both have replacement front wings. Possibly the roadster sas OE wings and the V8 not. Or maybe it is how the bowl has been positioned in the aperture. |
