MG MGB Technical - new soft top
IS IT A HARD JOB FITING A NEW SOFT TOP? IS IT EASIER TO BUY ONE WITH A HEADER RAIL ON? 1972 mgb roadster. THANK YOU. |

The hard part is in getting the material centered and properly snug, where it goes over the header rail. Doing the installation on a warm day, or in a heated garage, makes all the difference. When I installed mine, it was on a cool day and I wound up with too much slack. A friend offered his heated garage and we drilled out the rivets and re-fastened the front of the top to the header rail. After 17 years, it is still easy to install and fits like new. The tops with the pre-installed header rails are costly and there is no guaranty that they will fit your car. RAY |

It's much easier fitting one with header rail already attached as it only involves about four screws. However whether that will result in the correct fit on your car is more of a gamble. Getting one without header rail and fitting it yourself should result in a better fit, but does require care and the right instructions. Those in Lyndsay Porter's 'Guide to Purchase and DIY Restoration of the MGB', republished as 'The mgb restoration Manual', should get you there. |
