MG MGB Technical - no head lights and blinkers

all the instruments work , car starts fine , but no lights anywhere. I checked the fuse 68 mgb gt. No head , blinker,or dome lights .Any clues?. I also noticed that the 4 prong connector that goes to the alternator box is disconnected. Could this be the problem. Thanks Karl ps as you can tell I just bought the car..

Bear in mind that being new to you the wiring and components could be in any state, you will have to work through each circuit in turn with a voltmeter, there may well be several faults to find.

headlights are unfused and come direct off the brown to the main lighting switch, and from there on a blue to the dip-switch, and from there to the headlights on blue/white and blue/red.

Parking lights were fused with two in-line fuses - one for the fronts and one for the rears, red wires both sides.

Turn signals come off the same fuse as the gauges, but via the hazard switch in the off position, this switch is a frequent cause of non-working turn signals. With the ignition on and the turn signals off you should have 12v on both greens on the hazard switch, on both terminals of the turn flasher (green and light-green/brown), and on the light-green/brown at the turn switch. With the turn switch operated the 12v should appear on the green/white or green red.

The interior light (and horns) come off the bottom fuse which is the purple circuit. If the horns work check the bulb and switches. If not check the fuses. But again you could have more than one fault.

The connector for the alternator will not affect any of these, but it will prevent charging of course. If it is disconnected I'd suspect that the alternator was faulty and draining the battery, possibly with a bad enough short to smoke the wiring, so take care when reconnecting.

Since you are going to have to go through all the wiring, clean every connection and make sure it is secure, correctly connected, and use dielectric grease on all the connections. Wiring schematics are are available at www.advanceautowire.com

This happened to me a few weeks ago when I was away in Vermont at a car show. The lights worked fine the 1st 2 days (and have for the past 5 years) but I noticed they were out one morning while I was in the Hotel. Fearing having to drive home early to avoid the dark, I check all fuses, no go. Finally, I rememebered I had stuff the trunk with items (back pack, cooler, etc.) for the trip, and must have accidently disconnected one connector in the red strand of wires that feeds the right tail light. Plugged in and voila. So check this out as well.
