MG MGB Technical - Noise in rear deck lid

I have a 1965 MGB and when I go over bumps there is a knock from the back. It turns out it is the internal flex of the truck lid around the hinge. It is not broken, it is flexing up and down right about where the hinge attaches. It is in the sheetmetal. Any ideas about how to strengthen this area?? Epoxy?
Frank Baker

Interesting. I wonder if this is the knock I've been chasing without success, from the rear of my B.

Thanks for the heads-up Frank.

Charlie.

Are you absolutely sure that this is from the sheet metal adjecent to the hinge and have you driven the car with the trunk lid off just to make sure. My guess is that its coming from the tubular dampers if you have them fitted. They are a source of trouble and can be proved by driving the car with the dampers removed although you must take care and not exceed about 30 mph as the car will become very unstable.
Iain MacKintosh

wow. I'm very impressed. I've heard many sounds in my MGB. Engine sounds, Suspension sounds, drive train vibrations...you name it. But there's no way I could ever spot the sound coming from the internal flex of sheetmetal in an MGB.

How did you isolate that one?
Philip

There are no non-stock rear shocks. It may be a broken tack weld

frank,
As others have said, there are a number of possible causes of sounds such as the one you have described. However, as you appear to have 'sighted' the panel movement you describe, I'd be concerned it may be the body doing the flexing , rather than the boot lid. A check of the condition of the sills might be in order.

It was a total strip down to the metal. There is no rust in this car. The body is old, but the sills are fine. I am sure that the body does flex, but I am also sure it is normal.
Frank Baker

That's good news Frank. I can only say that I am not aware, in my car, of the flex issue you have identified.
