MG MGB Technical - Noisy Fuel Pump?


When I turn the ignition key to the first position on my 1979 MGB, it admits a steady banging noise from what I believe is the fuel pump - the black housed unit in the trunk.

The car will turn over but will not start.

Is this this the fuel pump? Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.

JT - If the fuel pump is making a "banging" noise like you describe and if the noise doesn't stop after a short period of time, you either have one of the Facet pumps (little square, run all the time, make a lot of noise) pumps or, if the pump is an SU, the pump is sucking air somewhere. This could be from a bad connection to the fuel tank, bad connection to the pump, hole in the fuel line between the two or a BIG air leak in the pump itself.
