MG MGB Technical - Non standard water pump problem
Hi, I am trying to replace the water pump on my 1966 mgb roadster. None of the three pumps available as standard replacements fit. It has to be a small impeller and the only replacement model of that type is too long, so it doesn't line up with the dynamo and main crank pulleys. Has anyone experienced this problem, and what's the answer. Alternatively' where is the best place to try and find a pump that fits? Measurements are casing to end 11cms, impeller diameter 6cms Thanks Jim |

Hi, the engine number is 18GB-V-H47376 the MGOC said that with that number, one of their pumps ought to fit, but they don't! I'm wondering if its possible that I have a non-standard engine with a standard engine tab grafted on? |

With your engine code of 18GB, you need a pump with the part number GWP 114, Which is exactly the same problem as I had, all the pumps I tried did not fit, either the belt was running out of line, or the impeller was incorrect, when I finally did get the correct one it leaked within a few days, finally I found one that fitted and was correct and did not leak, since fitting this pump I have completed a 3000 mile trip tp Austria without any problems, The pump I fitted was a Quinten Hazel part number QCP 556, and I bought it over the internet from sales@partsinmotion.co.uk it was about £30-00 |

Thanks for the information I will go onto the site and buy one. I'll let you know if it works! |

There are short pumps, and long pumps. With the long ones you need a deep pulley, and with the short ones a shallow pulley. But then you need spacer between pulley and fan or the fan hits the engine, unless you fit the fan the wrong way round, and that needs long screws. Adding the spacer to a long pump means the fan hits the radiator! More info here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/coolingtext.htm#mfans |
