MG MGB Technical - Novice painter
Here's the deal - I have a 67 Roadster which is in pretty good condition EXCEPT for the rear wing seams along the top where the paint has flaked off. There is no rust or rot to blame - just some non sticky paint from a respray in 1986. I can't afford to pay someone else to spray the seams as I have been quoted several hundred pounds, so here's the question - can I, as someone who has never done it before, touch in the paint myself? I don't have a garage but could probably get access to one as I know that will be crucial. Any advice would be greatly recieved. Thanks |

If it is a standard colour, the mg specialists can supply cans of aerosols at around £7/can. If it is the seam only, then you mask off the wing either side of the strip, and then flat it or scrape off the flaking paint, and then prime and colour spray. Alternatively, if it is a standard sort of colour, again masking, and then prime and paitn with a brush to get a reasonable finish, this doesn't need to be done in a garage, just a nice dry, sunny day. If the wings themselves are affected, it is possible to flat back, feathering the edges of the good paint, and mask off and spray primer and colour coat, with a little overlap onto the good paint of some thinner coats from the aerosol. Follow this up with some T-cut to flat back to a smooth finish. The match may not be perfect if the older paint has faded slightly. The alternative is to get a local paint supplier to match the paint and make a can up for you, although there minimum quantities required, but the spare spray will come in handy. Martin. |
