MG MGB Technical - OEM Mirrors 72 MGB
I am having a hard time finding original replacement mirros for my 1972 mgb roadster. Mine swivel betwen the base and stem, once the stem is swiveled, it exposes 2 mounting screws. Seems to be no longer available from Victoria or Northwest. The replacements offered have a different base and will probably not cover the already painted door areas. Any sources out there? Best regards, Doug |

Hi Doug, Not sure about availability, but a word of caution: I replaced the mirrors on my previous 72 with OE replacements that were available about 5 years ago. They are TERRIBLE. They are virtually impossible to adjust to any usable angle, the material/metal they were constructed of was junk, AND the chrome started flaking off within 2 years of purchase. Are you just replacing mirrors, or doing a restoration? While it's not "original", I recommend the later style mirrors. MUCH more easily adjustable, and the chrome on the replacement mirrors seems to hold up fairly well. I believe the base on the later mirrors is smaller though, so this probably wouldn't work without some paint work. But, I'm still not fond of the material used in their construction. This raises a question to the BBS members: Is there a source of brightwork for our cars that doesn't produce crap? Most of the products I've seen are really cheaply made... Thx. J |

J, Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep gathering information and may have to resort to later model mirrors. The mirrors on the car are deteriorating and don't adjust or tighten up correctly. This is a rattle and irritant because I can't see the area I need. Best regards, Doug |

Doug, Yeah, I know what you mean. As I said, the problem is, the replacement mirrors will not fix this. They are just as inadjustable as what you have. J |

Just bought some new replacement TEX mirrors. (Later style). They seem 'alright' but hardly are a thing of beauty. The chrome is too shiny (just like aftermarket grilles), and there are some ugly screws where the originals were elegantly 'screwless'. The seals are a bit loose and I'd bet they won't hold up for 32 years like the others did. still, they work. I believe you can tighten and adjust the original TEX. You'll have to: 1. remove the seal 2. take out the mirror glass 3. tighten the screw and nut that holds the mirror onto the base. doubt that works for the earlier styles though |

Phillip, Thanks for everyone's input. I will try to tighten the original ones. If not, I got an e-mail from someone in Mich that has several sets in pretty good shape. Best regards, Doug |
