MG MGB Technical - Oil Cooler Unions

2 simple jobs this weekend! 1st, rebuild the brake master cylinder, 2nd replace the oil cooler hoses.
The brake grief is posted separately!

I cannot get the oil hose unions off from the cooler itself, It's so tight and corroded that the alloy cooler is distorting. The only thing I haven't tried is heat. Any simple tips, or is it brute force/heat/bang/ouch/mgoc spares website!

Hi Pat....had the same problem recently on my MGC..Didnt want to tru heat on the soft cooler body...I removed the cooler with the hoses attached(cut the hoses off if needed) then with a hacksaw blade cut through the union parallel with the thread but not all the way(you dont want to cut into the thread)insert screwdriver in cut slot & twist to break through & open up the union. It does work......Steve

I had the same problem so replaced oil cooler and hoses.......

Yes, take off the cooler complete with hoses. Then using two spanners one on the cooler and one on the fitting remove the fitting nut. If you can't remove the nut then apply some heat to it and try again. It's highly unlikely that you will damage the cooler with the amount of heat you require to slacken the fitting.

Tried this morning, one came off easily after sawing the nut. The other was almost welded on even after splitting the nut....result split the cooler at the joint to the union. Looks like my first idea was about right. It looks like there was some kind of jointing compound on the seal which made this a nightmare!
