MG MGB Technical - Oil Filter Comparison

There has been a couple of post about types of oil filters, and I ran across this URL sometime ago that provives some interesting insight on various brands of oil filters. I believe the author seems to be an average user, but take it for what you may feel free it is worth.

This is the link to the site:

You can also browse some of the other links on the same page for additional info.

Thanks, R. This study has been around for a long time in one version or another on the web, and it is good to see it is still being hosted by someone. This particualar incarnation looks like it may have been updated, and if so, that is good. Things do change, and what was Gospel last year or 10 yrs ago, may not have the same relevance today.

Despite a prior post about how good Fram filters are - they SUCK. I had a filter crack on me and I lost a newly rebuilt engine. I am not the only one either as a fellow MG Club member almost lost his T-bird motor.

Furthermore I lost 10 lbs of oil pressure when I installed a Fram on my Miata. I immediately took it off and heaved it to its proper spot - the garbage pail.

IMHO I like Purolator Plus or whatever their more expensive filters are called.

I took a chance and installed the overpriced K&N filter. Some had reported pressure drops with this unit. I have had no issues with it whatsoever and plan to continue using them.
Steve Simmons

I like the Mann W917. Never any drainback problems.

Ditto on the K&N, no pressure changes from previous applications, the car came with several Motorcraft FL300, when that supply was gone I went for the K&N, only based on the reputation of their high quality air filters, which I have used for several years on many different cars. Pressure comes up quick on cold start, even with 101K miles on the engine. They cost about 3X over a normal filter, about 2x the top Purolator. I imagine they are more efficient at filtering, and offer a 1 inch nut on top which makes them easy to remove. I go out of my way to avoid Fram, having read some negative info a few years back. I would not use on my daily driver, a Dodge truck simply because I change that 4X per year, the MG gets a new oil filter in the Fall before I put it up for the winter with fresh oil.

Ditto on the Mann W917. As far as I am concerned it is the best.

If your local supplier doesn't have it, you local Volvo dealer has it as a re-branded Volvo part (a bit pricey though at about $8.50).

Wix, NAPA Gold (made by Wix), Purolator Pure One, Mobil-1 - all good filters.
