MG MGB Technical - Oil filter conversion
Just changed the canister oil filter on my 66 roadster to the spin off type. Used the adapter from the MGOC but have a couple of issues. I found the adapter (straight down type, not the 'figure 8') to be a very tight fit and needed a vice to seat it. The oil filter is also a bit smaller than original (midget?). The MGOC technical dept say they will come to back to me with any info but I wondered if anyone has any information? Regards, John |

Never used that adaptor John and can't quite see where you used a vice? Re. the filter, if it has a make and number I can give you the spec. It will be smaller diam to clear the block when hanging but as the adaptor is non-standard it could be any. MG 70 onwards is W916/1 in Mann, 3/4" 16 UNF thread, sealing washer 62mm inside diam and 72mm outside, can 93mm diam and 95mm length, with anti-drain valve and 0.9 bar bye-pass valve. Rich |

Thanks Rich, sorry for delay, been away for a long weekend. The MGOC quoted me filter GFE 121 which I believe is a Fram 2964. They quoted me Fram 2825 originally but that was too long to clear the side member. Needed the vice to press fit the adaptor into the original filter head (Tecalemit FA2126). It sits on the same seal as the original canister, an extension screw then allows the modern filter to be used. Not happy using the vice as its difficult to judge the pressure on the seal. Seems to be OK though. Did wonder if the adaptor has been machined to too tight a tolerance. Would appreciate info on spec and any recommendation of best makes. John |

Hi John Cross referring filters is like Chinese whispers and those 3 come out to 11 Mann part numbers. Many filter makers have rationalised their ranges over the years but I have a 2005 set of Mann cats and they at least seem to keep subtle differences between applications and give details. Anyway, all these are 3/4" 16 UNF thread, sealing washer 62mm inside diam and 72mm outside and have similar relief pressures. The differences are the diameters and lengths and possibly anything unknown inside such as paper type and quality. GFE 121 includes the top mount MGB one which is 93mm diam and I don't think that will fit hanging due to the diam. That would seem the reason for supplying Fram 2825 which is 76 or 80mm diam and 100 or 120mm long, depending on exact cross ref, which you find too long so perhaps yours is 120mm. Fram 2964 is similar to GFE 121 but according to Mann is a small version 76mm diam x 79mm long so if MGOC suggest that one then it makes sense. In Mann, Fram 2964 is 2 numbers of which W712/43 would seem the best as it has a more correct relief valve pressure. However, right next to W712/43 in the Mann list is W712/38 which is dimensionally the same with the same relief pressure and cross refs to GFE 121! Looking at these 2 in more detail W712/43 fits small Fords such as Fiesta and Escorts whilst W712/38 fits Saab turbos so we can only speculate on the differences inside the can. So, W712/38 is listed by Mann for Saab and as a cross ref for GFE 121 and is 76mm diam x 79m long with 1 bar relief and anti drain valve. This has been useful as I've very little room for my top mount due to a dynamo so I'll try that one next change. Rich |

John, I replaced the cannister assembly on my 67' GT with a MOSS adapter. Has worked for me for many years. I use a Fram filter that is for an MGA. I think it is a Fram 3622, but I will have to check and post here. Steve |

Thanks Rich, have noted the numbers for the next oil change. Off to Corsica in June so need to be confident! Steve, was yours the upright adaptor (figure 8 shape) or straight down? Had the upright adaptor but never fitted it, concerned about oil drainage. John |
