MG MGB Technical - Oil Filter for Spin-on Adapter?
What filter should I use for the spin-on oil filter adapter? Also, what transmission fluid should I use? Anyone had any luck with the Redline MTL? I use it in my Honda, but I think it might be too thin for the ol' MG. |

Todd, If it is a Moss spin-on conversion (NOT a late factory type installed on your car) it uses a Fram PH 3600 or the equivalent. My personal preference is to use oil per factory specs in your transmission. I've heard of the MTL getting past seals. |

I've used MTL in my MGA transmission for over a year. No problems, just makes shifting like butter with very sensitive feedback. -M.S. |

Todd. If you have the standard, 18V oil filter adapter, it will use any oil filter for the 72 or 73 on MGB. My favorite is the Mann W917 filter available from BAP (an old line import parts supplier) or the K&N HP2001 filter, available from many sources. Several people have tried the Redline MTL in the MGB, non-overdrive, tranny and reported good results. I have had no problems with straight 30 weight or Castrol 20-50 in many years of use. I have also tried Mobile 1 and was not impressed. It seemed that it tended to leak more and you seemed to have to shift somewhat slower or the gears tended to clash. Not sure it really makes much of a difference in what you use, as long as it is a non-OD tranny. For an overdrive, engine oil seems to be required. Les |
