MG MGB Technical - Oil filter help!!

I need to know what common brand of filter will fit my car,
1967 MGB. The filter on there now is a Unipart GFE 148
Jordan

Jordan. Your year used a cartridge type oil filter which fight inside a large, detachable can. The can was removed from the car by loosening the long bolt which ran through the bottom of the can and up to the filter head on the side of the engine. So, if you have a canister style oil filter, it is not original. In the early 70s, with the introduction of the 18V engine, an "inverted canister" type oil filter was introduced. This "18V oil filter adapter" will retro-fit the older engines. I have one on my 68. Moss and other vendors also sell an "spin on filter conversion kit" for early cars. I do not know if they use the 18V adaptor or not. Therefore, there are two things you can do. First, go to the parts store and try to cross reference your current filter to a more commonly available one. Second, pick up an oil filter for a 73-80 MGB and see if it fits. Les

Googling 'GFE148 +mgb' seems to show that it's the hanging spin-on. The inverted spin-on is a GFE121. If I'm not mistaken, they will not interchange. I think your best bet is to do as Les says and cross-reference GFE148 to something else. Of course, there's always mail order as well....

Here's a list of cross-overs that I found. I have no idea if this information is good. Perhaps a good starting point.

Jordan,

I'll verify that the WIX 51374 is the correct cross for the Unipart GFE148. Changed mine last weekend. You probably have the same hanging spin-on adapter I'm using (my car is a 1969 model) but I can't identify its origin. Bought it used from a local British parts suppplier a number of years ago.

I use Purolator L100028 on my hangdown adapter on my 74 roadster. They are also used on
some midgets. Advance Auto carries them in our area.

It is a hang down style. I tried getting a filter for a 73-80, but it was too big. I know a source for Wix locally that I will try tomorrow.

GOT IT!!
The K&N HP 1002 is a perfect swap for the Unipart GFE 148.
Granted it's a bit more expesive, but K&N seems to know thier filters.

Jordan,
That filter was most commonly used on 1275 Midgets, but some MGB's used it. Who knows why, maybe the factory ran out of the correct adaptor and substituted them from 1275's. It could be that a previous owner had bolted the 1275 adaptor onto the car. Anyway, here are a few more interchanges.
