MG MGB Technical - Oil Filter Modification 67B

Hi

Has anyone fitted the oil filter conversion from, filter hanging downwards, paper element, to screw on modern canister type. I believe you get an aluminium collar that bolts up to the old bolt location and the canister spins on to the collar. Is this correct and if so, how easy is it to remove canister for changing, as it would appear to be slightly difficult to access.

Cheers

Graham, I installed one of these conversions some years ago and was not pleased with the results. I later went to the upside down spin on design and have no complaints. Ray

Graham,

I converted my '64 using the Moss kit, circa 1994. The kit replaced the whole filter head with a new one. My mechanic-at-the-time replaced it for free when doing an oil change because he was tired of oil running own his arms into his shirt.

I use a NAPA Gold 1516 oil filter. When I ordered, the only option was the Fram filter. I ordered one for the size (PH3600), but switched th NAPA Gold several years ago.

I have been very pleased with it.

if you change to an alternator, you will have room to use the late model oil filter adapter. It is easy to acess, but messy because the filter opening is facing down.

I have the hang down spin on adapter for an early engine that I have sitting in my garage. It appears to me the problem is that when you remove the spin on filter you will probably loosen the adapter as well.

I have not had problems with the adapter yet. There was a tabbed washer that fit between two prongs and the other tab(s) bent over the nut. Remember, oil filters are only supposed to be hand tight, so you should not have to use a lot of force to loosen it.
