MG MGB Technical - Oil filters - alternatives available from MGOC

As you might remember from the recent threads about dodgy drainback valves in new oil filters from Unipart and Champion, I had been in contact with Roger Parker and others at the MGOC to try to find a solution. Got this yesterday - worth noting next time you need a filter!

Hi Tim

Thanks for your comments.

We now supply GFE121F which is the FRAM version with no drainback problem. Also GFE 173 can be used but this has a smaller canister size.

Hope this is helpful

Kind Regards

Add as well:
Purolator Pure One PL14670
Volvo 3517857

My local MGB parts supplier who imports from the UK 95% of his stock has sold me a GFE 422 Unipart oil filter for my 1978 MGB. Apparently, Unipart has discontinued (??) the GFE 121 Filter to be replaced with the GFE 422 model. It looks the same from the exterior. I did not get any expalnation as to why the 121 was superceded with 422. Anyway, I have installed it on my car's engine and have not seen (or heard) any difference... yet. I am curious to hear from the UK readers if they have encountered the "new" filter model and any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hmmm... apparently Fram has greatly improved their product. I haven't used one in several years but the PH-43 was the absolute WORST with seemingly no anti drainback at all. Took about 5 seconds for the oil pressure gauge to register. Junked it and have used Castrol, Purolater and Mann since. Would like to hear from anyone using these new PH 43's as they are the most readily available.

Don't forget the AC Delco PF13C.

I want to second Rob's recommendation of the Volvo filter...i have a 960 and a 245 and for years i did not realize that the B can use a standard volvo filter...
