MG MGB Technical - Oil pan gasket replacement
I need to replace the gasket and bang out some dents in the oil pan. Do I need to raise the engine, or can I get in and do it as it sits? thanks! Don |

Don, Assuming you mean an MGB and not your midget, I think you will have to pull the bolts out of at least one engine mount to have enough room to get to the bolts at the front of the pan. At least that's how it was on my '68. The pan bolts will be easier to reach if you take both sides loose, but if you have stock air cleaners, it may be easier to just free up one side. If you don’t have a lift, jack the engine up and slip some wood between the mount and the mount point on the chassis. Charley |

I did mine without moving the engine...the bolts in the front are tough to back out, since the pan has a lip, but the pan wiggled out...When you replace, put a few flat washers under the front bolts, so you can tighten more easily... |

Don- Oil sump gasket leaks develop over time as the gasket deteriorates from both heat and its constant contact with oil, in time becoming a real nuisance.
