MG MGB Technical - Overdive wiring / In-line fuse
I have placed some images and a wiring diagram for the addition of an in-line fuse with an O/D gearbox on my web site. Thanks to Paul Hunt for his assistance. -mike http://www.mzaff.com/mgbtechnical.htm |

Good one Mike As one who has suffered a loom meltdown, I recommend to all those with gear lever mounted overdrive switches to carry out this modification without delay. Cheers Ian F |

I've been running a 30 amp fuse in line with the big brown wire coming from the solenoid for years. I had a harness go up in smoke back in 1976 when the headlight switch shorted out on my old '64 B. At present I use a 30A fuse from a Toyota. No splicing required. It's saved my bacon twice in the last 8 years. |

If considering fusible links in the solenoid browns you really need two - one in the wire(s) up to the bulk of the car wiring and one in those to the alternator. A fuse for the fuel pump is also a good idea since this has also caused loom damage. Like the OD fuse this can be easily inserted at the bullet connector where the main loom joins the rear loom near the junction of the rirewall and right-hand inner wing. |

I will be adding a fuse at the top of the gearbox harness and one for the fuel pump as well. |

Paul has made me realize that my diagram needs some clarification. I really should place the fuse at the top of the gearbox loom where it connects to the main loom. This provides greater protection than my version. As Paul said, "The closer the fuse is to the voltage source the better." I will update the diagram in a couple of days. |
