MG MGB Technical - Overdrive Solenoid

I am checking an early B overdrive on an MGA with minimal clearance from the tunnel and I'm not sure if the solenoid is actually working. The wiring is ok - the person who put it in used very thin wire that melted the insulation when turned on(!!) - so I have replaced and checked all that. Should I be able to hear or feel the solenoid moving when current is applied when stationary (on stands)? It's an early type D overdrive with the external solenoid, and it doesn't work on the road.

Thanks

Yes, there should be a distinct click as the solenoid moves the operating lever.

If you can access it, take off the side cover and you can see the solenoid shaft and the lever - it may just be stuck.
Chris at Octarine Services

Thanks Chris - is it worth treating it like a fuel pump and giving it a gentle tap with a hammer? Or is that a bit risky?
